Visiting Otters’ Andrews Nets 41 as CSUMB Takes Advantage of Charity to Down Toros, 84-70

Carson, CA – Visiting Cal State Monterey Bay took advantage of 40 trips to the charity stripe compared to the Toros' 12 on a day when long range shots were falling left and right to put down host CSUDH 84-70.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 12-12, 6-11 CCAA, but remains in the eighth and final spot for the CCAA tournament by virtue of a Cal State L.A. loss.

The Toros grabbed an early 14-9 lead on senior Jessica Liang fourth three-point make in the first seven minutes of play, but the Otters responded as a team hungry to end a long 17-game losing streak.

CSUMB then went to work at the charity stripe, knocking down four-of-four followed by a trey by Dana Andrews at the 11:23 mark to give the Otters the lead at 16-14.

After trading baskets and leads over the next two minutes, guard Alma Lopez got a basket for the Otters to spark a run that ended on another trey by Andrews, giving CSUMB a commanding 38-25 lead that the Toros could only shave down to eight before the buzzer.

Both teams were locked on target from long-range as they combined for 13-of-23 from behind the arc, but CUSMB held a major advantage at the free throw line by nailing 11-of-13, while the Toros were only 3-for-5.

After intermission the Otters quickly expanded their lead to double digits and held a 10-point advantage at 61-51 with 12:58 on the clock.

Diana Leasau hit a jumper after pulling down an offensive rebound to cut the deficit to eight, and Liang and Michelle Kribell followed with a trey and a jumper in the paint, respectively, after which  Aujaneé Baldwin drove to the basket to bring CSUDH to within two at 62-60 with 8:41 left in the game.

Staggered, the Otters regrouped and took advantage at the free throw line to push their lead back up to double figures, outscoring the Toros 22-10 over the final stretch to take down the Toros and end a long 17-game losing streak.

The free throw disparity was the difference in the contest as the visiting Otters hit 32-of-40 from the line while the Toros hit just 7-of-12.

Andrews was tough to stop for CSUMB with a game high 41 points, going 9-for-13 from the floor, including 7-of-9 from long range and 16-of-20 from the charity stripe.  Lopez was the other Otter in double figures with 20 points.

Liang led the Toros with 18 points, nailing six treys to bring her within 13 made three-point shots of tying the CSUDH all-time career record of 240 set by Karee Bonde (1990-94).  Baldwin and Alana Bailey rounded out the Toros in double digits with 15 and 13 points, respectively, with Bailey also chipping in 11 boards.

CSUDH takes on San Francisco State on Saturday, February 23 in the last home game of the season. Four-year seniors Alana Bailey, Michelle Kribell, and Jessica Liang will all be honored in a special pregame ceremony.
