CSUDH Not Up to Challenge in 72-67 Loss to Cal State Monterey Bay

Box Score
Carson, CA -- In a game that had NCAA regional and CCAA Conference implications, it was visiting Cal State Monterey Bay that displayed more energy, efficiency and desire, and the result was a 72-67 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked 7th in the latest NCAA West Region poll.  With the loss, the Toros still find themselves in 5th place in the conference, albeit now tied with two other schools, with a huge showdown looming against San Francisco State tomorrow night, which sits in 4th place one game ahead of the Toros.

The Otters, now 10-13, 9-8 CCAA, started like a team that had won seven of eight coming in, jumping to a 16-4 lead on a layup by D'Shon Cannon at the 13:12 mark.  CSUDH rallied behind a Mike Steed trey and a Rodney Yearby (pictured) layup to cut the lead to 16-9 just a minute and a half later, but Jose Sanchez's 19 first half points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-7 from long range, allowed CSUMB to double the Toros' output at 36-18 with 4:41 left in the first half as the Otters settled for a 38-26 cushion at the break.

The second half didn't fare any better for the hosts in the early going as a Cannon trey with just under six minutes elapsed gave the visitors a 20-point lead at 54-34.  The Toros finally woke up, outscoring CSUMB 20-7 over the next eight minutes to trim their deficit to 61-54 with 6:17 left in regulation.

After exchanging buckets, CSUDH looked to regain possession after defending CSUMB for 34 seconds, but a Steve Monreal launch as the shot clock expired hit paydirt, giving CSUMB a 66-56 lead at the 4:31 mark.  Unfettered, a Yearby jumper and Nonso Nibo 3-pointer brought CSUDH to within 66-61, setting the stage for a would-be fantastic finish.

CSUMB, however, would have none of that as the Otters' precision at the foul stripe, 10-of-11 in the second half, quelled any hope of a Toro comeback as CSUDH's subpar 4-for-8 effort at the charity stripe after the break failed to equal CSUMB's acumen down the stretch.

Sanchez led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, while Monreal added 15 and Cannon 11.  A much smaller team, the Otters gave up just one more rebound (29-to-28) and were outshot 56.9% to 44.4%, but enjoyed a +5 advantage at the charity stripe in the 5-point win.

Yearby and Jerrell Smith led the Toros with 15 points each, while Nibo and Steed chipped in 10 apiece in the loss.  As a team, the Toros, now 14-9, 9-8 CCAA, connected on five more field goals, but 10 less 3-pointers, in the loss, while missing 6-of-11 from the free throw line.

A possible hosting assignment for the first round of the upcoming tournament is at stake tomorrow night as San Francisco State pays Carson a visit, with first tip scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Torodome.  Prior to the start of the contest, the Toros will honor four seniors playing in their final regular season home game in Cardinal & Gold.
