Toros Rout Coyotes, 79-59, in Changing of the CCAA Guard

Rodney Yearby tied for game-high honors with 15 points, pulling down a game-high 6 boards in the win over CSUSB

Carson, CA -- If tonight's match-up of the two schools picked to finish 1-2 in a CCAA coaches preseason poll was any indicator, the changing of the CCAA guard officially has taken place after Cal State Dominguez Hills routed Cal State San Bernardino by a 79-59 count Saturday night in the Torodome, establishing themselves as the team to beat in the CCAA.  Rodney Yearby helped pace the Toros with 15 points and 6 rebounds as CSUDH defeated CSUSB for the first time since January 5, 2001 to snap a string of 15-consecutive losses.

For the second night in a row against a CCAA school, the Toros lit up the net from the floor, making exactly 15-of-27 shots from the field in each half.  A balanced first-half attack led by James Cawthorne's 8 points bolstered CSUDH to a 36-25 lead in which they tallied four more boards and five mor assists in the session, while holding the 'Yotes to just 38.1% shooting from the field.

It was much of the same after the break as a Yearby jumper and Robert Willhite layup put the Toros up 16 at 41-25 with just over 18 minutes left in regulation.  CSUSB mounted a comeback of its own on a Devin Montgomery trey to cut the lead to 13, and a DuBois Williams free throw to trim the lead to 11 with 14:19 left in the contest.

The Toros, however, would have non of CSUSB's comeback as an old-fashioned 3-point play by Ryan Walton started a 7-point run that pushed CSUDH's lead up to 18 at 12:03 left to play.  That's where the lead hovered until reserve Geno Riney free throw gave the Toros their first 20-point cushion at 67-47, pushing it to as high as 25 on a Tim McGrath 3-pointer with 3:33 left.

A Michael Hernandez layup, two of his 15 points on the night, gave CSUDH its biggest lead at 79-53 with 2:07 left, until two Michael Frazier 3-pointers accounted for the game's final 6 points and the Toros' 20-point win.

CSUDH again used its balance and fresh bodies to subdue the Coyotes, with all 14 players seeing action.  Riney made a huge impact defensively with a pick and his defensive intensity, while Hernandez again used his court vision on a couple of head-turning assists.

The Toros, who are off to their best start in the program's history at 7-0, 2-0 CCAA, continue their homestand on Tuesday, December 9, as The Master's College pays the Torodome a visit, with tip off set for 7:30 pm.
