Drought Spells Doom for Toros in Dropping CCAA Opener to Cal Poly Pomona 55-48

Ashley Johnson posted 9 points and 4 boards on the night

Carson, CA -- Though posting a 36-23 first half lead boasting 25 points total from Neka Mixon and Brittney Blankenship, the Toros (3-1, 0-1 CCAA) were unable to secure a CCAA opening victory and keep their undefeated streak alive as they fell to the visiting Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona 55-48.

With Ashley Johnson posting first on the board for the Toros off a MacKenzie Matthias feed it seemed that the momentum would last through all 40 mintutes of play.

Quickly running the board up, the Toros secured their first big break in the first half as Kayla Montalvo dropped a three off a pass from Blankenship to give them a six point lead. The Broncos responded as a Paulina Kotula jumper gave them a 1-point lead with 9:12 to go.

CSUDH responded as another Johnson jump and a three from Blankenship ended the half at 36-23, giving the Toros their biggest lead of the night.

The Broncos had other plans in the second as they scored 14 straight points, with the clincher coming from Unique Anderson to give them the lead at 37-36. Johnson again attempted to regain momentum in the Toros favor with a drained jumper as CSUDH had its final lead of the night at 38-37.

Two final free throws from CPP clinched the game at 55-48, giving the Toros their first lost of the 2008-09 season.

Leading the Toros on the night was Mixon with 15 points and Blankenship with an additional 10. Defensively, Barbara Houston, Ennisha Kyles# and Johnson all posted 4 boards.

Now 3-1 (0-1 CCAA) the Toros will host Cal State San Beranrdino Saturday, December 6th with tip-off at 5:30 pm.
