Toros Improve to 2-0 With 73-69 Win Over Central Washington

Mixon tallied a team-high 19 points in leading the Toros to a win over CWU

Turlock, CA -- Senior Ennisha Kyles tallied the game's sole double-double of 16 points and 10 boards, while Neka Mixon (pictured) led all Toros with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor as CSUDH won its  second-consecutive game at the Eva Schicke Memorial Classic by upending Central Washington 73-69.

The two teams traded baskets early until two Kyles free throws gave the Toros a 10-6 lead with 13:14 left in the period.  Kyles and Brittney Blankenship combined for the next seven points to push the edge to 11 at 19-8 before the Wildcats outscored the Toros 13-3 to trim the lead to just one with just over 3 minutes to go before the break, eventually facing a 5-point deficit entering the half.

CSUDH stretched its lead to six on a Mixon lay-up at 18:33, before CWU's Stephanie Wenke gave the Wildcats their first lead of the second half at 30-29 with exactly 17 minutes left in regulation.  The Wildcats extended their lead to as large as 5 points before Mixon tied the game at 42-42 with a made foul shot.  The two teams tied 10 more times, the last time at 68-68 on the first of two Kyles free throws with just a minute left in the game, taking a one-point lead on the second make.

After an ensuing miss by CWU, the Wildcats were forced to foul, and the Toros made just enough shots to come escape with the 4-point win.

CWU shot 44.4% from the field compared to CSUDH's 36.5%, but the Toros converted 30 makes at the charity stripe to just 23 for the Wildcats.  In addition to the double-figure scoring by Kyles and Mixon, Blankenship chipped in 10 points in the win.  CWU's LeeAna Busch dropped 22 to lead all scorers.

The Toros get an extended break before their next contest, hosting Biola (CA) in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, November 25, with tipoff set for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
