Women's Basketball Starts Season Right With 72-64 Win Over Northwest Nazarene

Ennisha Kyles made 7 of her 11 field goals to lead the Toros with 18 points

Turlock, CA – Though trailing 34-44 to the Crusaders of Northwest Nazarene University, the Toros, who committed 18 turnovers in the first half, held onto the ball in the second and forced NNU to commit 20 of their own. The flip in this ratio gave the Toros their first win of the season at 72-64 in the Eva Schicke Memorial Classic hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.

The Toros took an early lead in the first half due to a made free throw from Ennisha Kyles. Though missing her second shot, Neka Mixon grabbed a quick rebound to throw the ball up and give the Toros a 3-0 lead.

With both teams posting 18 rebounds in the first half it was CSUDH's field goal percentage that brought them to their biggest lead of the half at 20-13 as freshman point Makenzie Mathias dropped a shot through the basket from beyond the 3-point line.

Grabbing the ball off a Toro turnover, NNU's Lindsay Brady gave the Crusaders a tied game at 20-20 after sinking her jumper. After a Toro foul from Kayla Montalvo, Crusader Mallory Whipple saw both her free throws go through the net to give her team a 22-20 lead. NNU used the momentum to keep the Toros at bay through the rest of the half ending in with a lead in their favor at 44-34.

It took 3:57 into the second half to bring the game around but a steal from Brittney Blankenship and a pass flipped to Kyles, who nabbed a quick layup, tied the game at 47-47. NNU's Whipple responded with a 3-pointer to give the Crusaders the lead once again which would only last to five points.

Blankenship, taking a pass from Montalvo this time, dropped a trey through the hoop to give the Toros their final lead of the night, which was all the Toros needed to capture their first win of the 2008-09 season.

Kyles, a senior, led the Toros on the night with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Blankenship closely tailed her with 16 total points and three steals to lead the team. Completing 7 of her 16 field goals was freshman Mixon who garnered 15 points on the night.

Now 1-0 after their first game the Toros will face Central Washington University tomorrow afternoon. Tipoff is set for 1:30pm.
