Toros Volleyball Cuts Down Visiting Lumberjacks 3-1

Posting 18 kills and 10 digs landed Ashley Clark her second double-double of the season

Carson, CA -- Playing a fierce four sets, the Toros took their first CCAA win of the season over the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State 3-1, going 28-26, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20. All Toros gave an impressive performance on the night with Ashley Clark leading in kills with 18, and Ashley Davison grabbing a stellar 7 total blocks.

Opening the night right the Toros grabbed a quick lead after forcing four consecutive 'Jacks attack errors to bring them to 5-1. Retaining the momentum trhoughout the rest of the set brought them within sight of the win at 20-19. As Clark completed three more kills the Toros were able to grab the set at 28-26 thanks to a well-placed serve from Heather Rushton to end the set on an ace.

Attempting to keep Humboldt in check in the second set, the Toros kept their deficit low through the end. A kill from Angela Ho, who saw action as tonight's libero, gave the Toros a final push to bring them to within three at 22-19. The 'Jacks responded and a final Toros kill from Madison Horsley was not enough as HSU took set two, 25-21.

In the third set, frequent point-streaks gave the Toros the push they needed to hold a constant lead throughout the frame.  However, the 'Jacks held a 23-21 lead and were ready to take the pivotal set until Toro Marissa Anderson turned around with a block assist with Davison, and a final kill to bookend four-consecutive points and a 25-23 set three win.

Planning to end the match in four the Toros sprinted to a 4-0 lead. However the 'Jacks Danielle Wells had other plans as she placed a kill to give HSU their only lead of the set at 8-7. A quick three-point push, courtesy of Clark and Anderson, regained the lead for the Toros to give them all the momentum they would need to take the set.

As Cassidy Mangum landed a service ace the Toros saw match-point at 24-18, but HSU grabbed two points to bring the set to 24-20 and keep their hopes alive. Clark and Kayla Huckabee, however, made sure the Jack comeback would be short lived as they put a stop to the HSU momentum by ending the set at 25-20 on a sensational block assist.

The Toros were led in the night by Clark who posted 18 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season. Proving that tonight's game was as much about defense as offense were Davison and Anderson, who grabbed a respective 7 and 6 blocks. Both Mangum and Rebekah Wolfgramm saw equal playing time to make 18 set assists each.

Now 2-20 (1-13 CCAA) the Toros will hit the road next weekend as they travel to Cal State Stanislaus on October 31st. First serve is set at 7pm.
