Matthew Cain begins his first year as an assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach for the men’s basketball program.
 
As an assistant coach, Cain will assist in all facets of the program, including travel, scouting, on the floor coaching, film exchange, recruiting, and administrative duties. 

As a strength and conditioning coach, Cain will develop and implement successful sport specific strength and conditioning programs for the men’s basketball program, and direct all preseason, in-season, postseason, and summer strength and conditioning programs. He will instruct members of the men’s basketball program of proper training techniques, while leading and motivating them to maximize their potential in a safe setting.

Prior to CSUDH, he served as a strength and conditioning coach for California Baptist University, gaining both knowledge and practical experience under head strength and conditioning coach Christopher Bates and assistant strength and conditioning coach Hillary Belmont.

At CBU, he was appointed to assistant strength and conditioning coach from October to December, while the Lancers' current coach was on maternity leave. He led and motivated student-athletes to maximize their potential, while establishing and ensuring a safe environment for student-athletes.
 
As a guard at CSUDH, he received the Dr. Richard Butwell Award, Dr. Hal Charnofsky Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award, CCAA All-Academic Awards, and was part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Prior, Cain captained and competed at MiraCosta College, where he was a scholar-athlete and the team MVP during the 2010-2011 season.
 
Cain earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from CSUDH in 2013, and his Master of Science degree from CBU in Kinesiology with a focus in Exercise Science and Sport Management in 2014.

He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA. In addition, he is a USAW Level 1 Sports Performance Coach (USAW-L1SP), Functional Movement Screen Certified (FMSC), and CPR/AED Certified through the American Red Cross.

Cain is also an adjunct professor in the Division of Kinesiology and Recreation at CSUDH.
