Dave Castillo returns for his fourth year as an assistant coach for the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball program. Since joining the program, he has split duties as a base coach and hitting instructor.
Castillo has 36 years of baseball experience that began as a player at Savanna High School in Anaheim. There, in his senior year, he garnished MVP honors on his high school team, and also was awarded MVP of the Lions Tournament that year as well as MVP of the Orange County North/South All-Star game.
After three years of college playing experience he signed with the Minnesota Twins and later with the Detroit Tigers.
Castillo went on to play professional baseball in the Pioneer League and later was hired by the Connecticut State League, where he became the youngest player/manager in professional baseball. He then spent the next three years with the Orange County Quakes as their player/manager. While playing 10 years of semi-pro ball in California, Castillo gave hundreds of private hitting lessons while working side by side with two former MLB players.
In 1998 Castillo joined the Biola University staff where he served as the hitting and bench coach for 15 years.
During this time, Castillo created an offensive plan that allowed the team to be more effective at the plate. Under Castillo’s tutelage, Biola was consistently in the top three in nearly all major offensive categories (BA, OB%, SLG%, HRs/game). In his 15 years of coaching at Biola he helped led the team to 3 NAIA World Series appearances and five GSAC league championships. Castillo also helped develop over 20 players that moved onto professional baseball.
Castillo is married to Carolyn and has a daughter, Devin, and a granddaughter, Autumn.
