Open Letter from Softball Head Coach Jim Maier

Open Letter from Softball Head Coach Jim Maier

As the head softball coach of Cal State Dominguez Hills, I would like to introduce myself and my program. My name is Jim Maier and I will be entering my 39th year as a coach and 16th year overall as head softball coach for the Toros. I am currently in my second stint at Cal State Dominguez Hills; my first stint was from 2000-13 and my second started before the 2019 season. Through 19 years of coaching in college I have won more than 600 games. Click here to read my full coaching bio.

Jim MaierThe Toros play in NCAA Division II, as members of the highly-competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with teams throughout California, from San Diego County to Humboldt County. Under my helm, CSUDH softball has become one of the most successful programs in the nation. The Toros have had a top-25 national ranking in six seasons, the highest at No. 2. We have made the NCAA Playoffs seven times, and reached the West Region title series in 2006, 2012 and 2013. CSUDH has won two conference championships and thanks to the effort and support of my coaching staff and players, I was named the CCAA Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2012. The program has produced five All-Americans, 24 All- West Region, 65 All-CCAA players, two CCAA Players of the Year and two National Players of the Week. We have averaged 35 wins a season since my staff and I arrived, including two 46-win seasons which are the school record.

We are still in the process and will always be in the process of building a stronger softball program with a commitment to developing people, as well as a strong winning tradition. We are relentless and are always striving to do things better than they’ve ever been done before, which is our general philosophy. We are extremely interested in finding student-athletes who are not only athletic and skilled, but possess the confidence, work ethic and drive that match the intensity it takes to be successful. We are interested in the student-athlete that wants to do whatever it takes to win and is willing to put in the work it takes to win on the field, in the classroom and in life. We call this the uncommon player.
Jim Maier
At CSUDH, we pride ourselves in having a highly-monitored student-athlete program, emphasizing academics; our softball team has achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher each year. We also strive to develop a caring family atmosphere between players, coaches and family members. We assert a mindset of commitment to the team, and having a purpose and philosophy behind everything we do on and off the field.

Finally, I wish to emphasize that we run a well-organized and structured program for the highly-skilled and dedicated softball player. We strive to be the best Division II program in the country. We FIND, TEACH, DEVELOP and GRADUATE well prepared student-athletes that will excel in the classroom, field and their personal lives. Upon graduation, we are confident that we have provided the necessary tools needed to be counted on in their daily lives, communities and in the world. If you are interested in becoming part of the CSUDH softball family and want to be part of something really special, please contact me so I may start the process of you becoming a Toro.
