IRVINE -- The start of the 2026 season hasn't been kind to the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team after host Concordia University Irvine swept the Cardinal and Gold (25-17, 25-13, 25-19) to open the Orange County Classic today, keeping the Toros winless in the new season.
Anna Sanzaro led the Toros with four blocks as the Eagles limited the Toros to a negative hitting percentage in the loss.
Trailing 5-1 in the opening set, CSUDH used a 10-5 run to take an 11-10 lead, courtesy of an Eagle attack error. CUI, however, replied with an 8-1 run of its own to take control of the set in the eventual 25-17 win.
The hosts continued their momentum in set two as CSUDH managed just two kills versus 10 attack errors to help CUI roll to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Toros made it a match in the third set, keeping pace with Concordia early until the Eagles inched to a 13-9 lead before increasing it to 23-13. After a CUI error,
Malia Jones served three-straight points to bring the Toros to with 23-17, but the hosts benefited from a Toro service error on match point to seal the win.
Dakota Carvo put down seven balls with
Giovannina De Sisto dishing six assists and
Makena Morrison and
Lainey Johnson sharing team-high dig honors with six each.
CSUDH looks to get in the win column tomorrow at 2:30 pm, taking on Biola University in the second of their three matches.
