Late Push Falls Short as Toros Drop League Opener at UC Merced

MERCED -- Visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills unleashed a flurry of shots against host UC Merced after falling behind 2-1 early in the second period, but the Bobcats withstood the Toro charge en route to taking a win to open California College Athletic Association play for both teams.

CSUDH falls to 2-3-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.

Juan Calderon scored the lone goal for the Cardinal and Gold in the 35th minute, via a successful penalty kick, as part of his three total shots to lead all players.

With the game scoreless heading into the 30th minute of play, the teams combined for two scores in less than two minutes, with Calderon's successful penalty kick at 34:18 erasing the short-lived lead Merced enjoyed by taking a 1-0 lead at the 32:25 mark.

Less than four minutes into the second half, the Bobcats broke the tie at 49:17, which proved to be the difference as Merced withstood five Toro shot attempts while attempting just two of their own shots after scoring to hold onto the victory.

The Toros outshot the hosts 10-8, including a 5-2 edge after falling behind, and took a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

CSUDH will look to even its CCAA ledger on Sunday as it travels to Stanislaus State for a 2 pm first touch.
