Leilani Fortuna-Ramos found the back of the net in the 73rd minute at host Vanguard University to cut Cal State Dominguez Hills' deficit in half, but the Lions survived a frenetic Toro surge in the final moments to escape with a 2-1 win over the Toros, evening both teams' records at 1-1.
After the teams played to a scoreless half over the first 45 minutes of play, Vanguard scored twice in a 3 minute, 21 second stretch to open the second half, with both scores courtesy of Jennifer Alvarez.
That's where the score remained until the 72:30 mark when
Alexis Delgado, who scored the game-winner in CSUDH's opener last Thursday night, fed Fortuna-Ramos, who made her own fortune by scoring the first goal of her Toro career.
Aaliyah Payne tallied a pair of shots in the match's waning minutes, including one on goal at the 82:25 mark, but Vanguard's defense held firm in improving to 1-1 on the year.
The Lions held a commanding 14-5 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks, forcing Toro keepers
Marlies Nauman and
Berlin Alcala to combine for three saves.
The Toros host Biola University for a non-conference tilt on Thursday, September 3, with first kick set for 7:00 pm at Toro Stadium.
