HAYWARD, Calif. -- No. 4 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills again found its offense missing against No. 3 seed Cal Poly Humboldt, resulting in CSUDH being bounced from the CCAA Tournament after an 11-0 mercy run rule loss, its second loss of the tournament.
The Toros now await their fate for entry into the NCAA regional, where eight teams will qualify and compete at two regional sites next week. Entering the week, CSUDH sat at No. 4 behind Cal State San Marcos, Cal State East Bay and Concordia University Irvine, with CSUSM and CSUEB near locks to earn hosting duties.
Today's game was decided after two innings as the 'Jacks scored a run in the bottom of the first and seven runs one inning later. Up 8-0, the designated home team added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-0 lead. CSUDH had one final at-bat to extend the game, but failed to get a hit in the fifth, ending the game via mercy run rule.
CSUDH had its best chance to score a run in the top of the third afterÂ
Mireya Rico blasted a double to lead off the frame. After two outs,
Makayla Bishop singled to shortstop to send RIco to third base, but the Humboldt starter induced a line out to end the threat.
Ashley Ogata suffered the loss, lasting just 1.1 innings. CSUDH's defense committed two errors that led to three unearned runs as CSUDH suffered back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season.
The Toros fill find out their fate on Monday, May 11, at 7 am PT. The tournament will feature 23 automatic qualifiers and 41 at-large bids, with CSUDH poised to claim one of those 41 spots after a stellar 36-22 campaign. Tune in
