Baseball Shut Out to Open Showdown at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES -- Five days after scoring a dozen runs in a win to close the last series, Cal State Dominguez Hills was held scoreless in a fast-paced 2-0 setback at host and crosstown-rival Cal State LA in a 2:36 minute contest.

The Toros managed six hits but committed three errors as starting pitcher Jordan Townley took the hard-luck loss to fall to 2-3 overall, despite fanning six Golden Eagles.

Both starting pitchers kept their opponents off the scoreboard over the first 4.0 innings of play, with Townley allowing just three hits over the first four frames.

CSULA, however, broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth.  That's where the score remained until the bottom of the seventh when the hosts tacked on an insurance run.

The Toros had a chance to tie the game in the top of the eighth after consecutive one-out singles by Quinn Johnson and Tristan Usher put runners on first and second, but CSULA induced a 1-4-3 double play to escape the jam, surviving a two-out single by Malik Balloue in the ninth to take game one of the four-game conference series.

Johnson got on base twice including one walk, but th Toros fanned 10 times in the loss.

The two teams play two tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch of game one set for a 1 pm start at Reeder Field.
