Baseball Drops Pair of One-Run Contests to Cal State Monterey Bay

CARSON -- Looking to bounce back from yesterday's opening-series loss, Cal State Dominguez Hills led late in both games of today's doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay but was unable to hold either lead as the Otters came from behind twice to post 6-5 and 5-4 wins over the Toros this afternoon.

Alex Sepulveda enjoyed a 4-fot-5 performance with three RBI in the opener before Quinn Johnson (pictured) went yard in the nightcap, driving in two.

The Toros fall to 10-10 overall and 2-5 in CCAA play.

The opener saw the Otters take a 3-0 lead after their third inning at-bat, only to see the hosts tie the game in the bottom half of the frame after an Alex Sepulveda RBI single brought home a pair of runs and Quinn Johnson score on a CSUMB fielding error.

With CSUDH leading 5-4 entering the ninth, the Otters rallied with four hits and two Toro errors which brought home both unearned runs, giving CSUMB the win after its closer fanned the side in the bottom of the ninth for the save.

Cortez added three hits in the loss as Julian Castro took the loss after a strong performance by starter Jordan Townley.

The nightcap saw the Toros turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning, the big blow coming on Johnson's two-run blast.

Similar to the opener, the Otters rallied with a pair of runs in the fifth and held on for the win as Drew Aguiar picked up his second save of the day, surviving a 2-on, 2-out would-be Toro rally.

Tristan Usher and Nigel Buckley each poked two hits as CSUDH dropped its fourth-straight contest.

The two teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12 noon on Toro Field.
