LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. -- They say it's not how you start, but how you finish. After dropping the first three games of the D2 West Coast Challenge, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team ended the tournament with two wins, the last coming in today's 7-5 win over Western Washington in which its defense committed zero errors.
Torie Au roped a pair of extra-base hits, including her first long ball of the year.
The Toros again started the offense early with
Makayla Bishop drawing a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 2nd for a quick 1-0 lead, bringing in Au, who began the frame with one of her three hits.
Ashley Goodale continued to swing her hot bat as the next batter, stroking a double to dead center and clearing the bases to put the Toros up 4-0.
After the Vikings cut their lead in half with a 2-run blast in the top of the 5th, Au got one run back with a solo shot to right-center field in the 5th inning,
Mireya Rico and Au combined to drive in runs in the 6th, insurance scores that were needed after WWU scored three in their 7th inning at-bat to bring them to within 7-5.
Nadia Juarez picked up the win (2-2) after 4.0 innings of work, allowing just one hit and one earned run.
For their efforts over the three days, Bishop and Goodale were named to the All-Tournament team.
CSUDH travels to Azusa Pacific on Friday to take on the Cougars in a non-conference twinbill, with first pitch of game one set for a 3 pm start.
