CARSON -- The celebration will have to wait. Needing one win to clinch one of the two remaining berths to qualify for the upcoming CCAA postseason tournament, Cal State Dominguez Hills ran into a Green and Gold buzz saw in No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona in a 95-69 setback tonight in the Torodome, and will have to wait until Saturday for their next opportunity to clinch a berth in the regular-season finale.
A'moree Ferrell led the Toros with 20 points, 18 coming in the second half after a blistering array of 3-point bombs.
The Toros suffered a subpar shooting night after connecting on just 34.8% of their field goal attempts compared to 47.7% for the visitors, who clinched at least a share of the CCAA regular season title. Compounded this discrepancy was an even larger on at the free throw line where the Broncos outscored the Toros from the charity stripe, 29 to 15, as CSUDH was called for 10 more fouls than CPP.
The outcome was decided in the opening quarter as Cal Poly Pomona raced out to a 15-1 lead en route to a 31-14 edge after one. It didn't get any better in the next two quarters as the visitors finished the third quarter up 70-39.
CSUDH's deficit grew as large as 31 at 79-48 at the 6:50 mark, before Ferrell began to feel it, hitting two long-range shots and four free throws in a span of 3:13 to bring the Toros to within 86-66 with 3:37 left.
But the Broncos answered, outscoring the Toros by six the rest of the way in the rout.
Tiara Jones chipped in 15 points,
Camryn Washington 11 and
Anela Thomas 10.
CSUDH will honor its senior class prior to Saturday's game hosting Cal State San Bernardino for a 1 pm tip, with a win assuring at least one more game in the CCAA postseason tournament.
