CARSON — The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team survived a 78–77 thriller over visiting Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday afternoon at the Torodome, as a Lumberjack layup attempt went awry with just two seconds left in regulation, making Jalen Brown's game-high 24 points stand up.
The win moves the Toros (16–5, 11–3 CCAA) into sole possession of second place in the CCAA standings and gives CSUDH its third-straight victory and eighth win in its last nine contests.
Dominguez Hills had to dig out of a three-point halftime deficit after Humboldt carried a 39–36 lead into the break, but the Toros responded with 42 second-half points to pull even and then surge in front late.
Brown finished with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting and knocked down four three-pointers, while DaSean Stevens added 16 points and three steals. Josiah Sanders chipped in 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds as the Toros won the turnover battle, 13–6, and turned those miscues into a 19–8 edge in points off turnovers.
Humboldt (12–8, 10–4 CCAA) was led by Shakir Odunewu's 21 points and seven rebounds, and Zaveion Bineyard went for 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The Lumberjacks shot 48.2 percent from the field and hit nine three-pointers, but CSUDH made up ground at the line (17-of-22) and with nine steals.
In the final minute, the Toros drew even at 77 before Brown put Dominguez Hills ahead for good with a driving layup with four seconds left. Humboldt called timeout and got a clean look at the rim at the horn, but the attempt rolled off to secure the one-point win.
Dominguez Hills heads to the Bay Area next week, opening the trip at San Francisco State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Toros bested the Gators 80-71 in the Torodome last December.
