SEASIDE, Calif. – A pair of early runs from Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball weren't enough to fend off a comeback, as the Toros dropped the series finale to CCAA opponent Cal State Monterey Bay, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
Dominguez Hills (23-14, 19-9 CCAA) got on the board in the third inning when Dalton Cram drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by Olin Snakenborg. After both runners advanced on a passed ball, Kaleb Castro brought home Cram with a sacrifice fly to right. Moments later, Snakenborg came around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Toros a 2-0 lead.
Despite the early advantage, the Otters clawed their way back into the game with two runs in the sixth and the go-ahead run in the seventh.
The Toros had multiple opportunities to extend their lead but left nine runners stranded on the afternoon. Defensively, Dominguez Hills turned one double play but also committed two errors, one of which contributed to the Otters' tying run.
Starter Justin Abercrombie turned in a strong outing, going 5.2 innings while allowing just one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Julian Castro (4-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the seventh.
Trey Winget led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, also adding a stolen base and getting on base after being hit by a pitch. Nigel Buckley also collected two hits and reached base three times. Snakenborg added two hits, a run scored and a stolen base, while Castro drove in the team's lone RBI.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will return to action on Friday, April 11, hosting Chico State for a CCAA matchup at 3 p.m. at Toro Field.
