CARSON, Calif,.- Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball battled through a dramatic doubleheader on Friday afternoon, taking the opener 4-3 in extra innings before dropping Game 2, 5-1, against Cal State San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field. The split moved the Toros to 27-17 overall and 21-12 in CCAA play, maintaining their spot atop the conference standings with the regular season nearing its end.
In Game 1, the Toros rallied from a pair of one-run deficits before Emilio Barrera delivered the game-winner with a double to left center in the 10th. Barrera finished the game 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the eighth and the decisive RBI in extras. Quinn Johnson had a career day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with an RBI, while Dylan Schumacher and Kaleb Castro each added key hits to pace a 12-hit effort.
Trysten Eddy allowed just two runs over 5.2 innings in the start. The bullpen combination of Brian Kraft, Chris Cornelius, Teige Barrett and Julian Castro kept the Coyotes in check. Barrett earned the win and Castro recorded his sixth save of the season with a scoreless 10th.
The Toros opened Game 2 with an early run on a Nigel Buckley RBI single in the first, but the Coyotes answered with five unanswered to earn the split. Buckley finished 2-for-3, while Johnson continued his strong day with two more hits. On the mound, Justin Abercrombie struck out four over 3.1 innings but was tagged with the loss, moving to 8-2 on the year. Joel Gaitan threw 2.2 innings in relief and allowed two runs.
As the regular season winds down, Dominguez Hills will wrap up the series with the Coyotes on Saturday, April 19, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The Toros remain in the driver's seat in the CCAA standings with the conference tournament less than three weeks away.
