Toros Drop Doubleheader to Wildcats to Split Series

CHICO, Calif. – After opening the series with two wins, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team was unable to complete the sweep, falling in both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Chico State. The Toros dropped Game 1 by a score of 6-1 before falling in a tight 4-3 battle in extra innings in Game 2.

Game 1:

The Toros fell behind early as the Wildcats plated a run in the first inning. Dominguez Hills held the deficit at one run until the fifth, when the Wildcats exploded for five runs to take full control.

The lone run for the Toros came in the sixth when Gaby Gandara reached on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on a throwing error while Mireya Rico scored unearned. Despite having five hits, Dominguez Hills was unable to generate consistent offense.

Rico led the team with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double, while Lillianna Garcia also added a double. Ashley Ogata (3-6) took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in two innings. Garcia, Alivia Holden, and Ally Fuentes combined to pitch the remaining innings, with Fuentes closing out the final frame scoreless.

Game 2:

The Toros struck first in the third inning as Rico doubled to right center, bringing in Jay Ross and Alexis Aguado for an early 2-0 lead. The advantage grew to 3-0 in the fifth when Torie Au drove in Ross with a groundout.

However, the Wildcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. The game remained locked until the eighth inning when the Wildcats pushed across the winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Rico once again led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Ross and Aguado each scored twice, while Andrea Tellez and Gaby Gandara also added hits.

Ashley Ogata delivered a strong start, going five innings while allowing just two runs on four hits. Garcia and Fuentes combined for the final three innings, with Fuentes (0-1) taking the loss after allowing one run in the eighth.

The Toros will play a non-conference makeup game against Vanguard on Sunday, March 16, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. in Costa Mesa.
