Box Score 2 COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team delivered a strong performance on the road, sweeping Vanguard in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday. The Toros secured a 2-0 shutout victory in Game 1 before rallying late in Game 2 for a 7-4 win.
Game 1:Â
The Toros relied on stellar pitching and timely hitting to take the opener. Ashley Ogata, Alivia Holden, and Lillianna Garcia combined for a three-hit shutout, keeping the Lions off the board while the offense came through in key moments.
Dominguez Hills broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when Mia Ayala, who reached on an error, scored on a clutch RBI single from Alexis Aguado. The Toros added an insurance run in the seventh as Gaby Gandara reached on an error and later came around to score on another defensive miscue.
Holden (3-4) earned the win, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Garcia recorded her first save of the season, closing out the final 1.2 innings with one strikeout. Aguado led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Jay Ross and Julissa Gomez also contributed hits.
Game 2:Â
Game 2 saw the Toros battle back from an early deficit before erupting for five runs in the final inning to secure the sweep. Vanguard took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Dominguez Hills responded in the third when Mireya Rico delivered a two-run double to put the Toros ahead.
After the Lions tied the game in the sixth, the Toros' offense erupted in the seventh. Gandara led off with a single and advanced to third on a defensive miscue. Aguado followed with a go-ahead RBI single before Ross and Rico each reached base, setting up a two-run double by Alani Nguyen to extend the lead.
Ashley Ogata (4-6) earned the win after 3.2 innings of work, allowing three runs on four hits. Holden provided 2.2 innings of scoreless relief before Garcia closed the door in the seventh. Rico led the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Aguado, Ross, and Nguyen each contributed key hits in the late rally.
The Toros return home for a non-conference doubleheader against Pace University on Monday, March 17, with first pitch set for 12 p.m. at Toro Diamond.
