ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills continued its strong play in CCAA action, sweeping Saturday's doubleheader against Sonoma State with an 8-7 victory in game one and a 7-1 win in game two at Seawolf Diamond. The Toros improve to 18-10 overall and 14-5 in conference play heading into the series finale.
In game one, the Toros struck early with a six-run second inning. Kaleb Castro started the scoring with an RBI single before Dalton Cram launched a two-run home run to left field. Noah Karliner followed with an RBI single, and Quinn Johnson reached on an error that allowed Jared Anderson to score. A wild pitch brought home another run to make it 6-0.
Anderson added a two-run home run in the third, extending the lead to 8-1. Sonoma State chipped away, scoring runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings before adding two more in the seventh to pull within one. Julian Castro entered in relief and shut the door, securing the save with two and a third scoreless innings.
Cram led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Anderson finished 1-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs, while Castro, Karliner, and Trey Winget each added an RBI. Trysten Eddy (2-2) earned the win, throwing five innings while allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. Castro picked up his fifth save of the season.
In game two, Dominguez Hills took control early and never looked back. Johnson put the Toros on the board in the first inning with an RBI single. Karliner added another run in the second with a bases-loaded walk to give the Toros a 2-1 lead.
The fifth inning proved to be the difference-maker as the Toros capitalized on errors and timely hitting. Three runs scored on a double to right field by Winget, while two more came home on defensive miscues by the home team.
Winget finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Johnson and Karliner each drove in a run. Olin Snakenborg contributed two hits and scored a run.
On the mound, Justin Abercrombie (6-1) was dominant, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Dominguez Hills will look to close out the series with a sweep in the finale against Sonoma State on Sunday, March 23, at 11 a.m.
