ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills secured a 3-1 series victory over Sonoma State despite dropping the finale 8-7 on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond. The Toros fought back from multiple deficits and tied the game in the eighth inning, but the home team responded with a late home run to take the win. CSUDH now sits at 18-11 overall and 14-6 in CCAA play.
The Toros fell behind early as the home team struck first with a run in the opening inning. Dominguez Hills responded in the second, capitalizing on an error that allowed Trey Winget to score and tie the game at 1-1. Sonoma State regained the lead in the third with a three-run frame, but the Toros answered in the fourth with four runs to take a 5-4 advantage. Nigel Buckley drove in two runs with a double down the left field line, followed by an RBI single from Teige Barrett and a sacrifice fly from Olin Snakenborg.
The back-and-forth battle continued as Sonoma State plated two runs in the fifth and added another in the sixth to reclaim a 7-5 lead. Dominguez Hills refused to go down quietly, pushing across two runs in the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. A single from Dalton Cram set up Buckley to score on an error, and Dylan Schumacher delivered a clutch RBI single to bring home the tying run.
The home team responded in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run, which proved to be the difference. The Toros were unable to rally in the ninth, sealing the one-run loss.
Buckley led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a double. Winget and Barrett each collected two hits, with Barrett adding an RBI. Cram also had a two-hit performance, while Schumacher delivered the game-tying RBI in the eighth.
On the mound, Evan Vazquez got the start and went four and a third innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out four. Chris Cornelius tossed a scoreless one and two-thirds innings in relief, and Julian Castro (2-1) took the loss after allowing one run in the eighth.
Despite the loss, the Toros wrapped up a strong weekend with a 3-1 series win and will now return home for another CCAA series against Cal State East Bay. The four-game set begins Friday, March 28, at 3 p.m. at Toro Field.
