Toros Take Down No. 1 Seed Point Loma to Claim NCAA West Regional Championship and Punch Ticket to Elite Eight

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team is making history. The No. 2 seeded Toros took down top-seeded Point Loma, 61-58, in a thrilling NCAA West Regional Final on Monday night at Golden Gym. With the win, CSUDH secures its first-ever trip to the NCAA Elite Eight and improves to a program-best 28-5 overall record, surpassing last season's 22-8 mark.

The Toros came out strong, using their size and defensive pressure to control the paint early. Adam Afifi set the tone, scoring eight first-half points while grabbing six rebounds, as CSUDH built a 10-point lead with just under six minutes left. Point Loma responded with a run of its own, but David Cheatom and Jeremy Dent-Smith kept the offense steady, combining for 15 first-half points. A late layup by Dent-Smith sent the Toros into halftime with a 33-27 advantage.

Point Loma came out aggressive in the second half, eventually taking a slim lead with under five minutes to play. However, the Toros defense locked in, forcing crucial stops and capitalizing at the free-throw line. Afifi came up clutch, finishing with 23 points and 13 rebounds, including a putback layup in the final seconds to seal the victory. Cheatom added 14 points, and Dent-Smith delivered in crunch time, knocking down key free throws to secure the win.

The Toros add another milestone to their CCAA regular season and tournament championships by now claiming the NCAA West Regional title. With the victory, CSUDH punches its ticket to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.

Cal State Dominguez Hills heads to Evansville, Indiana for the NCAA Elite Eight on Tuesday, March 26. The Toros will await their official seeding and opponent in the coming days as they continue their unforgettable season.
