CARSON, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills erupted for six runs in the fifth inning and added late insurance to secure a 10-6 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in the series finale Monday afternoon at Toro Field. With the win, the Toros improve to 15-10 overall and 11-5 in CCAA play, taking three of four games in the series.
After falling behind 5-0 through four and a half innings, the Toros' offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth. Trey Winget sparked the comeback with a two-run home run to right field, followed by Dylan Schumacher's RBI infield single that brought in Jared Anderson. With the bases loaded, Teige Barrett doubled down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving Dominguez Hills a 6-5 lead.
The Toros added to their advantage in the seventh when Kaleb Castro singled up the middle, bringing home Barrett and Schumacher for an 8-5 lead. After the Broncos pulled one run back in the eighth, the Toros responded with back-to-back home runs as Quinn Johnson launched a solo shot to left, followed by Schumacher's second homer of the day to right field, capping the scoring at 10-6.
Schumacher led the offensive charge, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Johnson finished 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI, while Barrett drove in three runs with a key double. Winget added a home run and two RBIs, and Castro delivered a two-run single.
On the mound, Evan Vazquez (2-2) earned the win, working six innings while allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits, striking out six. Chris Cornelius pitched two innings of relief, surrendering one run while striking out one, and Julian Castro closed out the ninth with a scoreless frame.
The Toros now turn their attention to another CCAA series as they hit the road to face Sonoma State, beginning Friday, March 21, at 2 p.m.
