Toros Drop First CCAA Game to Cougars

SAN MARCOS,Calif.-The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros kicked off their 2025 CCAA schedule against the Cal State San Marcos Cougars. The Toros battled through a challenging game, but ultimately fell 12-2 in the first of a three-game series. 

The Cougars jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning before the Toros answered in the third with a run of their own. Teige Barrett's solo home run in the top of the third cut the Cougars' lead in half. However, San Marcos responded with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, effectively pulling away. In the seventh inning, the Cougars added another run and then four more in the eighth, sealing the 12-2 victory.

On the mound, five Toro pitchers saw action, with Dylan Goodrich (0-1) taking the loss after 1.1 innings of work, allowing two runs. Darren Roberts tossed 3.1 innings, giving up three runs while striking out two. Aiden Taylor and Derek Ryan followed with brief appearances, with Ryan allowing six runs in 1.2 innings. JJ Nolan pitched a scoreless 1.0 inning in relief.

Teige Barrett was the standout performer for the Toros, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Jared Anderson also had a strong day at the plate, collecting two hits in four at-bats, while Dylan Schumacher went 1-for-3 with an RBI. On the mound, Darren Roberts had the most strikeouts, fanning two batters in his 3.1 innings of relief.

The Toros will return to action tomorrow for another game against Cal State San Marcos, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
