No. 14 Toros Avenge Lone Conference Loss With Gritty Win Over Cal Poly Humboldt

CARSON, Calif. – The No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros got its revenge on Cal Poly Humboldt, defeating the Lumberjacks 70-65 in the Torodome on Thursday night. The Toros, who suffered their only conference loss to Humboldt earlier this season, improved to 21-4 overall and 18-1 in CCAA play.

The Toros came out strong in the first half, setting the tone early with aggressive defense and efficient scoring. Jeremy Dent-Smith led the way, driving to the basket and knocking down key free throws, while Alex Garcia and Adam Afifi helped the Toros build a 32-22 halftime lead. The defense held the Lumberjacks to 34.6% shooting in the first half, forcing tough shots and limiting second-chance opportunities.

Humboldt fought back in the second half, cutting the Toros' lead to just one possession multiple times. The game turned into a battle down the stretch, but the Toros stayed composed at the free-throw line, going 19-of-20 in the second half. Dent-Smith iced the game with a pair of clutch free throws in the closing seconds to secure the victory.

Dent-Smith led all scorers with 22 points, going a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line while also grabbing a season-high 11 rebounds. Garcia had a season-high 18 points, making key shots throughout the game. Afifi added 14 points and nine rebounds, while DJ Guest provided valuable minutes off the bench with seven points.

The Toros will close out their home schedule on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they host No. 25 Chico State for Senior Day. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. as the Toros honor their graduating players in their final regular-season home game.
