Toros Pull Away Late to Defeat San Marcos, Improve to 17-4 Overall

CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros secured a hard-fought 79-66 victory over Cal State San Marcos on Saturday afternoon at the Torodome. The win improves the Toros to 16-4 overall and 13-1 in CCAA play, keeping them at the top of the conference standings.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading baskets early. Dominguez Hills shot 37.9% from the field and knocked down three three-pointers to maintain a slight edge. Jeremy Dent-Smith led the offense, scoring 10 of his team-high 19 points in the opening frame, while Adam Afifi contributed eight points and five rebounds. The Toros' defense held strong, forcing seven turnovers, and entered the break with a 31-28 lead.

In the second half, Dominguez Hills found its rhythm, shooting 63.3% from the field and pulling away late. Afifi continued to be a force inside, finishing with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Alex Garcia was efficient, adding 14 points and six rebounds, while Jordan Hilstock provided key buckets, scoring 13 points, including three three-pointers. The Toros' defensive intensity picked up, forcing nine turnovers and turning them into 19 points.

Dent-Smith led the way with 19 points, seven assists, and two steals, while Afifi posted 16 points, six rebounds, and a block. Garcia added 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Hilstock chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, and two steals. David Cheatom contributed eight points and three assists, and DJ Guest provided four points and energy off the bench.

The Toros shot 50.8% from the field, 41.7% from three-point range, and 90% from the free-throw line. They controlled the rebounding battle with a 30-29 edge and outscored San Marcos 26-12 in points off turnovers.

Dominguez Hills remains home to face Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in another CCAA matchup.
