HAYWARD, Calif. – The No. 9 Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team closed out the regular season in championship form, defeating Cal State East Bay 1-0 on the road Thursday afternoon to secure back-to-back California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season titles.
With the win, the Toros (12-2-4, 8-0-2 CCAA) remain the only unbeaten team in conference play and clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CCAA Tournament. Cal State Dominguez Hills becomes just the second team in the last 30 years to capture consecutive CCAA regular-season championships.
Sergio Valenzuela netted the game's only goal, while goalkeeper Keegan O'Brien anchored the defense with another shutout to help the Toros extend their unbeaten streak to 12Â matches.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, the defending CCAA regular-season and tournament champion, will now prepare for the CCAA Tournament semifinals on Nov. 14. The Toros, ranked second in the region in save percentage (.807) and goals against average (.647), are aiming for their third NCAA Regional appearance in the last four years.
Ten teams will make the NCAA Super Region 4. Tournament champions from the CCAA, GNAC, Lone Star, PacWest, and RMAC will all receive automatic bids to the NCAA postseason. The final five spots will be at-large selections from among the five conferences. The Super Region 4 will begin play with the first and second rounds Nov. 20-23. Â
