LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills delivered one of its biggest wins of the season, upsetting CCAA second-place Cal State LA in a thrilling five-set battle Saturday night inside University Gym.
The Toros edged the Golden Eagles 25-23, 17-25, 14-25, 28-26 and 18-16, handing LA just its second loss in conference play after entering the night with a 10-1 CCAA record.
Dominguez Hills showcased a balanced attack, with six players recording five or more kills and three finishing in double digits. Bailey Fuches led the way with 13 kills, while Ava Hurry followed with 11 kills and 10 digs. Natalia Walden-Schulz added 10 kills while hitting .471, and Anna Sanzaro was efficient with eight kills and a .533 hitting percentage.
Setters Jaiden Mojica and Giovannina De Sisto guided the offense with 46 combined assists — 25 from Mojica and 21 from De Sisto — while De Sisto also led the defense with 11 digs. The Toros hit .250 in the decisive fifth set and held LA to a .077 hitting percentage to complete the road upset.
"Strong bounce back from the Toros, we played with determination and resiliency," head coach Teddi Esko said. "A great team-first mindset going into the fourth and fifth set helped us close out the match."
