IRVINE, Calif. – In a rematch of last season's NCAA Super Regionals, Cal State Dominguez Hills softball Toros fell to Western Washington, 7-2, in the second game of the Concordia Kickoff Classic on Friday at Great Park Stadium.
The Vikings, who ended the Toros' postseason run last year, struck early with a five-run first inning, capitalizing on an error and a pair of timely hits. Dominguez Hills responded in the third when Jay Ross drove in Julissa Gomez on a groundout to second base, trimming the deficit. In the fourth, Mireya Rico led off with a double and came around to score on a two-out RBI double from Sam Kwiatkowski, making it a 5-2 game.
Despite the Toros' efforts, the Vikings added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.
Alivia Holden (0-1) took the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs on three hits in four innings. Ashley Ogata provided two innings of relief, allowing one run while striking out two.
Dominguez Hills recorded five hits, led by Rico, who went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Kwiatkowski added an RBI double, while Alani Nguyen and Alexis Aguado each contributed a hit.
The Toros look to bounce back as they continue play in the Concordia Kickoff Classic this weekend. They will play two games tomorrow against Hawai`i Hilo at 1pm and Fort Lewis College 6:30pm.
