CARSON, Calif. — The No. 3 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros continued their historic season with a 96-72 victory over Sonoma State on Thursday night at the Torodome. The Toros improved to 21-0 overall and 13-0 in CCAA play, using a balanced offensive attack and relentless defense to remain unbeaten.
Dominguez Hills started strong, outscoring the Seawolves 27-19 in the first quarter. Nala Williams set the tone early, scoring eight of her game-high 25 points in the opening frame. The Toros' defense was aggressive, forcing six turnovers and converting them into fast-break points to establish an early advantage.
In the second quarter, the Toros extended their lead with a 20-9 scoring run. Their defensive intensity ramped up, holding Sonoma State to just 23.5% shooting in the period. Williams and Devon Lewis combined for 10 points in the quarter, while Kya Pearson knocked down key free throws to help Dominguez Hills take a 47-28 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw the Toros continue their dominance, outscoring Sonoma State 26-19. Asia Jordan was a force in the paint, grabbing five rebounds and scoring six points in the period. Teagan Thurman provided a boost off the bench, contributing four points and a pair of steals. Dominguez Hills shot 42.9% from the field in the quarter to maintain a comfortable 73-47 lead heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Sonoma State attempted to rally, but the Toros kept their foot on the gas, closing the game with a 23-25 scoring edge. Williams added six more points in the final frame, while Jordan and Lewis continued to control the tempo.
Williams led all scorers with 25 points, shooting 11-of-14 from the field while adding five rebounds, three assists, and six steals. Jordan recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Thurman contributed 12 points and 10 boards off the bench. Pearson finished with six points and two steals, while Lewis chipped in seven points and four assists. Malia Goldsmith and Joe'l Benoit each added five points, combining for three steals to help anchor the Toros' defensive effort.
The Toros' defense played a crucial role in the victory, forcing 23 turnovers and scoring 28 points off those mistakes. They also controlled the paint, outscoring Sonoma State 50-38 inside while dominating the glass with a 40-27 rebounding advantage.
Toros will return to action at home in the Torodome on Saturday, February 1, at 1 p.m. as they host Cal State San Marcos in another CCAA matchup.
