CHICO, Calif. — The No. 3 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros remained undefeated with a 78-69 road win over Chico State on Thursday evening at Art Acker Gym. The Toros improved to 19-0 overall and 11-0 in CCAA play, while the Wildcats dropped to 13-4 overall and 8-3 in conference action.
The game opened with an evenly matched first quarter, with both teams tied at 19. The Toros leaned on Nala Williams, who scored eight points in the frame, and Teagan Thurman, who hit an early three-pointer. Despite some missed opportunities in the paint, Dominguez Hills forced six turnovers to keep pace with the Wildcats.
In the second quarter, the Toros tightened their defense, holding Chico State to just nine points while outscoring them 17-9. Williams added five more points, including a three-pointer, while Cristina Jones controlled the glass with three rebounds. Dominguez Hills went into halftime with a 36-28 lead, shooting 40% from the field and forcing nine turnovers in the first half.
The third quarter saw Chico State attempt to mount a comeback, matching the Toros with 18 points in the period. Thurman led the way with six points, including another three-pointer, while Kya Pearson added five points and played tough defense. Despite the Wildcats' efforts, the Toros maintained a 54-46 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, the Toros sealed the game with a 24-23 edge. Williams, Thurman, and Pearson combined for 20 points in the frame, with the team shooting 50% from beyond the arc. The Toros' defense forced three turnovers in the final minutes to prevent any late-game heroics from the Wildcats.
Williams led the Toros with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Thurman matched her scoring total with 18 points, including four three-pointers, while also grabbing five rebounds and recording three steals. Pearson added 11 points, three rebounds, and three steals, while Jones chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. Malia Goldsmith provided a spark off the bench with eight points and four rebounds, and Devon Lewis contributed six points and three assists.
The Toros' defense forced 16 turnovers, converting them into 27 points, and controlled the paint with 36 points inside. Dominguez Hills also secured a 31-29 rebounding edge and recorded 13 steals as a team.
The Toros will remain on the road as they head to Arcata for a CCAA matchup against Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday, January 25, at 1 p.m.
