POMONA, Calif. — The No. 5 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros extended their undefeated streak with a hard-fought 65-61 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday evening at Kellogg Arena. The Toros improved to 13-0 overall and 6-0 in CCAA play, using clutch performances and stellar defense to secure the victory in their first game of 2025.
The game started with a tight first quarter, as both teams traded leads. The Toros shot 38.5% from the field, but Pomona's efficient shooting gave them a slight 15-13 edge after 10 minutes. Asia Jordan set the tone early for Dominguez Hills, contributing four points and three rebounds.
In the second quarter, the Toros picked up their pace offensively, outscoring the Broncos 23-19. Jordan continued to dominate inside, scoring eight points in the frame, while Teagan Thurman added six points and three rebounds. The Toros' defense forced five turnovers in the quarter, giving them a 36-34 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams struggle to find their rhythm offensively. The Toros shot 37.5% in the period but managed to outscore Pomona 14-13. Dominguez Hills leaned on its defense, forcing seven turnovers and limiting the Broncos to just one three-pointer. Thurman and Hosanna Walker combined for nine points, helping the Toros hold onto a slim 50-47 lead entering the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Dominguez Hills executed in crunch time, outscoring Pomona 15-14 to seal the victory. Jordan's ability to attack the rim proved decisive, while Nala Williams sank a critical jumper to extend the Toros' lead late in the game. The defense held strong, forcing a crucial turnover in the final minute to secure the win.
Jordan led the Toros with 18 points, eight rebounds, and two steals in an all-around performance. Thurman contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, while Walker added nine points and a steal. Williams finished with eight points, four assists, and four steals, while Cristina Jones provided key energy off the bench with eight points and four rebounds.
The Toros will look to continue their perfect season on Saturday, January 4, as they head to Cal State San Bernardino for a CCAA matchup at 1 p.m.
