Toros Start the New Year with a Statement Win Over No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona, 67-50

POMONA, Calif.— The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros opened 2025 in style, defeating No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona 67-50 in a dominant CCAA matchup Thursday night at Kellogg Arena. The Toros improved to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in conference play, using a combination of stifling defense and a standout performance from Adam Afifi to hand the Broncos their third loss of the season.

The Toros set the tone early in the first half, holding Cal Poly Pomona to just 28% shooting from the field. Dominguez Hills capitalized on their defensive intensity, forcing 10 turnovers and turning them into 16 points. Afifi dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of his season-high 30 points in the opening 20 minutes while grabbing seven rebounds. Alex Garcia added seven points and two assists to help the Toros build a commanding 34-18 halftime lead.

In the second half, Pomona attempted to mount a comeback, but the Toros responded with timely offense and clutch defense. Afifi continued his stellar night, adding 14 more points and finishing with a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds. Garcia contributed nine total points, while Jordan Hilstock added eight points and nine rebounds. Jeremy Dent-Smith chipped in with nine points and a game-high five assists, helping Dominguez Hills maintain control throughout the half.

Afifi led all scorers with 30 points, shooting 9-for-14 from the field, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 10-for-13 from the free-throw line. Garcia added nine points, seven rebounds, and four blocks, while Hilstock contributed eight points, nine rebounds, and three steals. Dent-Smith rounded out the effort with nine points, five assists, and three steals. The Toros' defense was stellar, holding Pomona to just 27.3% shooting and forcing 15 turnovers.

The Toros will return to action on the road Saturday, January 4, for another CCAA showdown against No. 23 Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m.
