CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros held off a late rally to earn a hard-fought 79-75 victory over San Francisco State in a CCAA matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Torodome. With the win, the Toros improved to 13-3 overall and 10-0 in conference play, continuing their perfect CCAA campaign.
The Toros came out strong in the first half, shooting an impressive 62.96% from the field and building a 45-30 lead at the break. Jeremy Dent-Smith paced the offense with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including three three-pointers. JT Tan added 12 points and six rebounds, dominating in the paint, while Jordan Hilstock chipped in nine points, including two three-pointers. Dominguez Hills' defense was effective in forcing eight turnovers, leading to 12 points on the other end.
In the second half, San Francisco State clawed their way back into the game, outscoring the Toros 45-34. The Gators capitalized on improved shooting, hitting 50% from the field, including five three-pointers. Despite the late surge, the Toros relied on timely baskets and clutch free throws to maintain their lead. Dent-Smith sealed the win in the final moments with four consecutive free throws.
Dent-Smith led all scorers with 25 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field, 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. He also contributed four rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Tan recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Hilstock finished with 15 points, four rebounds, and a steal. Alex Garcia added five points, three assists, and three rebounds, while DJ Guest and John Solomon combined for 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
The Toros finished the game shooting 49.1% from the field and forced 15 turnovers, which they converted into 15 points. They also dominated the paint, outscoring the Gators 40-22 inside.
During the game, the reigning Player of the Year Jeremy Dent-Smith surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for his career. Since joining the Toros, Dent-Smith has played in 73 games, scoring 1,017 points while averaging 13.9 points per game. His career stats include shooting 42.5% from the field, 35.5% from three-point range, and 74.5% from the free-throw line. In addition to his scoring, Dent-Smith has tallied 235 rebounds, 162 assists, and 77 steals over his career.
Dominguez Hills will be on the road Thursday, January 23rd, when they play Chico State at 7:30pm.
