CARSON- The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros split the double header against the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes, 1-1 in a tightly contested matchup.
Game 1:
The Toros got off to a strong start in the opening game, with
Anthony Accordino driving in
Noah Karliner in the first inning, followed by a solo home run from
Trey Winget in the third, putting the Toros up 2-0 early. The Toros extended their lead to 4-1 by the fifth inning through strategic hitting, including another RBI single by
Anthony Accordino and
Alex Sepulveda.
However, the Coyotes would comeback in the later innings, starting with a solo home run by in the sixth. A pivotal eighth inning saw the Coyotes rally back with two-RBI single, to surge ahead 7-4.
Despite a late effort by the Toros, including a two-RBI single from
Brett Castillo, the rally fell short, ending the game 7-6 in favor of CSUSB.
Game 2:
In the second game, Cal State San Bernardino took an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. However, the Toros quickly began chipping away at the deficit, with
Noah Karliner scoring on a balk in the first inning and
Trey Winget adding a solo home run in the third.
The Toros completed their comeback in the fourth inning with
Emilio Barrera and
CJ Masciel each grounding out but driving in a run in the process, pushing the Toros ahead 4-3. The team's pitching and defense held firm for the remainder of the game, securing a 4-3 victory and splitting the day's matchups.
In a pivotal performance that played a key role in the day's doubleheader,
Julian Diaz delivered an impressive outing on the mound in Game 2, securing a win and bringing his season record to 4-2. Over 7 innings of work, Diaz allowed 3 earned runs while striking out 6 batters.
The series will end tomorrow as the Toros take on CSUSB in the finale Sunday, March 24 at 12pm.
