TURLOCK, Calif. – In a nail-biting finish, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros were edged out by the Stanislaus State Warriors with a final score of 5-4. The game was a constant tug-of-war, with each team seizing and relinquishing the lead.
The Toros opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Brandon Castillo lifted a sacrifice fly to center, driving in
Alex Sepulveda for the first run of the game. The lead was short-lived, however, as Stanislaus State responded in the bottom half with a single, bringing in a runner in to tie the game. They took the lead when the Warriors laced a single to right, scoring a run.
The Toros fought back in the sixth inning with a solo shot by
Anthony Accordino, tying the game at two apiece. Stanislaus State pulled ahead in the seventh with another RBI single to take the score to 3-2 in favor of the Warriors.
Undeterred, the Toros tied the game in the eighth inning when
CJ Masciel singled to left, allowing
Emilio Barrera, who had reached on an error, to score. Stanislaus who evened the score once more in the bottom of the eighth as they scored off of a double to center field.
For the final time, the Toros scored at the top of the ninth after Barrera reached on a dropped fly ball to left field allowing
Trey Winget to cross the home plate to tie the score 4-4.
The game was evenly balanced until the bottom of the ninth when Catalano delivered a decisive blow with an RBI single, bringing Brooks home for the game-winning run.
The Toros are home next week as they take on Cal State San Marcos with the first game of their series taking place Friday, March 1
st at 2pm at the Toro Field.
