AZUSA, Calif. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros split games against the Azusa Pacific Cougars after falling in the first game 5-1, and then winning the second 3-2.
Game One
The Toros took an early lead in the first inning when
Mariah Ramirez launched a home run to center field, setting an optimistic tone for the team.
However, the tide turned in the fifth inning when Azusa Pacific responded with a solo home run to left center, equalizing the score at 1-1. The momentum firmly shifted in favor of Azusa Pacific later in the same inning, doubled to center field, driving in two runs after pushing Azusa Pacific ahead 3-1.
The Cougars scored two more runs in the sixth as they Toros fell 5-1 in the first game of the double header.
Game Two
The Toros secured the win against Azusa Pacific in the second game with a final score of 3-2.
The game began with Azusa Pacific taking an early lead in the first inning when as they homered to center field, putting the first run on the board.
The Toros quickly responded in the second inning, tying the game at 1-1.
Alexis Aguado skillfully executed a bunt single to the pitcher, bringing
Samantha Kwiatkowski home.
The momentum continued for the Toros into the third inning when
Kianna Abellera launched a solo home run to left field, giving the Toros a 2-1 lead..
The score remained unchanged until the seventh inning, which proved pivotal for both teams. The Toros extended their lead to 3-1 when
Mariah Ramirez delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing
Gaby Gandara to score.
However, Azusa Pacific refused to go down without a fight. In the bottom of the seventh inning they homered for the second time, this time to right center, bringing the score to a narrow 3-2.
Despite Azusa Pacific's late surge, the Toros held on to their lead, securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
The Toros return to the Toro Diamond Monday, February 12
th as they take on Adelphy University for a double header with first pitch set for 12pm.
