CARSON, Calif. — The No. 9 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros delivered a statement win, handing previously undefeated Central Washington their first loss of the season with an 85-73 victory on Wednesday afternoon at the Torodome. The Toros improved to 11-0 on the year, while handing the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent their first loss of the season with suffocating defense and balanced scoring.
The Toros came out strong in the first quarter, holding Central Washington to 14 points while scoring 19 of their own. Nala Williams set the tone early, contributing eight points, including a three-pointer, to give Dominguez Hills a slim lead. In the second quarter, Central Washington found some rhythm offensively, scoring 19 points, but the Toros answered with key baskets from Asia Jordan and Teagan Thurman to stay ahead 34-33 at halftime.
The third quarter proved pivotal, as the Toros' defense clamped down and forced eight turnovers, turning those into 12 points. Dominguez Hills exploded for 28 points in the quarter, with Williams and Thurman combining for 17. The surge gave the Toros a 62-54 lead heading into the final period. In the fourth quarter, Dominguez Hills sealed the win with a 23-19 edge, highlighted by clutch free throws from Williams and a series of strong defensive stops by Jordan.
Williams led the Toros with a game-high 24 points, adding seven rebounds, six assists, and five steals in an all-around stellar performance. Jordan recorded 19 points and pulled down four rebounds, while Thurman added 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Jo'el Benoit contributed 10 points and two rebounds, while Kya Pearson anchored the defense with six steals and five rebounds.
The Toros' relentless defense proved decisive, forcing 33 turnovers and converting them into 35 points. Dominguez Hills also dominated in the paint, scoring 46 points compared to Central Washington's 18.
The Toros will look to remain undefeated with a CCAA matchup against Cal State LA on Saturday, December 21, at 1 p.m in the Torodome.
