HILO, Hawaii — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros continued their undefeated start to the season with a commanding 95-50 win over Western Oregon on Friday afternoon in the Big Island Classic. The victory improves the Toros to 7-0 on the year.
The Toros set the tone early, outscoring the Wolves 24-11 in the first quarter. Nala Williams who led the way with six points in the opening frame, while Hosanna Walker added two early three-pointers. Dominguez Hills turned up the intensity in the second quarter, using relentless defensive pressure to force 11 turnovers. The Toros capitalized on those mistakes, outscoring Western Oregon 27-10 to take a commanding 51-21 lead into halftime. Contributions from the bench were pivotal, with Teagan Thurman scoring nine of her 13 points in the first half.
Western Oregon showed brief signs of life in the third quarter, scoring 17 points, but struggled to contain the depth and defensive prowess of the Toros. Dominguez Hills maintained control, closing the period with a 69-38 lead. In the final frame, the Toros showcased their balance and efficiency, scoring 26 points to seal the dominant win. Dominguez Hills' defense was a key factor throughout the game, forcing 24 turnovers and converting them into 32 points.
Williams led the Toros with 18 points, six rebounds, and seven steals, while Hosanna Walker added 17 points, shooting 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Teagan Thurman chipped in 13 points and four rebounds, and Malia Goldsmith contributed nine points and six boards.
The Toros will look to extend their undefeated streak tomorrow as they take on Northern State University at 4 p.m. in their second game of the Big Island Classic.
