LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team continued their dominant start to the season with a 75-52 victory over Cal State LA on Sunday afternoon at University Gym. The Toros improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in CCAA play, using a balanced attack and stifling defense to maintain their perfect record.
The Toros set the tone early, jumping out to a 22-12 lead in the first quarter. Joe'l Benoit opened the scoring with a free throw at 9:03, and Kya Pearson followed with a fastbreak layup at 8:33 to make it 3-0. Nala Williams added to the surge with a layup at 7:50, converting the and-one opportunity to extend the lead to 6-0. Williams capped the quarter with a three-pointer at the buzzer, showcasing the Toros' early dominance.
In the second quarter, Dominguez Hills maintained their offensive efficiency, shooting 53% from the field. Asia Jordan powered the offense with back-to-back layups at 8:53 and 8:15, while Hosanna Walker connected on a three-pointer at 7:52 to push the lead to 29-22. Cristina Jones added a layup at 7:04, and Williams drained another three-pointer at 7:00 to give the Toros a commanding 35-25 advantage. By halftime, the Toros held a 44-30 lead.
The third quarter saw the Toros extend their lead, outscoring Cal State LA 20-11. Jordan continued her strong performance, scoring on a fastbreak layup at 9:10 and adding another inside bucket at 7:48. Dominguez Hills' defense was impenetrable, forcing turnovers and limiting the Golden Eagles to just 33% shooting in the period. Devon Lewis added a jumper at 6:00 to give the Toros their largest lead of the game, 66-45.
In the final quarter, Dominguez Hills sealed the victory with stifling defense, holding Cal State LA to just 11 points. Jada Sanders added the final exclamation point with a layup at 1:41, pushing the lead to 75-49 before Cal State LA hit a late free throw.
Williams led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, adding six rebounds and four steals. Jordan almost notched another double-double  with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Benoit contributed nine points and six boards. Pearson's defensive presence stood out with seven assists and four steals, helping the Toros force 27 turnovers.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will next head to Hawaii to compete in a tournament hosted by Hawaii Hilo, opening against Western Oregon on Friday, Nov. 29, at 4:00 p.m. PT.
