Toros Claim CCAA Championship with Dramatic Penalty Shootout Victory Over Cal Poly Pomona

HAYWARD, Calif.— The top-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros claimed their 8th CCAA Championship in dramatic fashion, defeating second-seeded Cal Poly Pomona 6-5 in penalty kicks after 110 minutes of scoreless action at Pioneer Stadium on Sunday. The victory marked the Toros' second conference title in the past three seasons.

The match was a defensive battle, with both teams creating chances but unable to find the back of the net during regulation or two overtime periods. The Toros fired 25 total shots, with seven on target, while holding Pomona to just three shots on goal. Michael McKibbin and Logan Kaufman were the Toros' offensive catalysts, each taking five shots and testing Pomona goalkeeper on multiple occasions. Kaufman came close to breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute with a powerful strike that was saved, while McKibbin's effort in the 60th minute was stopped at the top of the box.

Goalkeeper Arturo Magaña delivered a standout performance for the Toros, making three crucial saves to keep the match level. His 106th-minute stop on a dangerous shot from the Broncos was a pivotal moment that extended the game into penalties. The Toros' defense, led by Ndifor Ginyui and Diego Barahona, was instrumental in shutting down Pomona's attack and limiting their set-piece opportunities.

The championship was decided in a tense penalty shootout, where the Toros held their composure under pressure. Jose Peredia, Ramiro Rosas, Kenny Lee, and Logan Kaufman confidently converted their penalties. In the decisive seventh round, Davien Karanikolas stepped up and buried his shot to clinch the title. Magaña secured the victory by denying Cal Poly Pomona's final attempt, sealing the game for the Toros.

Mikey McKibbin and Logan Kaufman emerged as offensive leaders with five shots each, consistently challenging the opposition. Goalkeeper Arturo Magaña's three saves, including the game-saving effort in overtime, highlighted his importance to the Toros' success. In the shootout, the Toros' precision proved decisive, with Karanikolas' final strike cementing their championship.

With the win, Cal State Dominguez Hills improves to 10-4-5 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play. The Toros now await their NCAA Division II Tournament seeding as they continue their quest for postseason succes!
