Toros Draw 1-1 with Chico State in Defensive Battle

CHICO, Calif. — Cal State Dominguez Hills earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Chico State on Sunday at University Soccer Stadium, with Azalia Salazar scoring early to put the Toros on the board. The draw moves Cal State Dominguez Hills to 3-3-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.

The Toros took control early, with Salazar finding the back of the net in the 8th minute, marking her first goal of the season. Her shot to the bottom left corner off a quick transition put CSUDH up 1-0. Alyssa Villalobos added to the early pressure with a shot over the crossbar in the 10th minute, followed by another attempt by Cynthia Ramirez in the 35th minute that went just wide.

Goalkeeper Kylie Yuzon played a pivotal role, making three saves, including a crucial penalty save in the 60th minute to deny Chico State's Natalie Mendoza. However, Chico State broke through in the 67th minute, leveling the match 1-1 with a goal from Hannah Pieri.

As the game progressed, the Toros' defense held firm despite increased pressure from Chico State, who took 10 total shots in the second half. Cheyenne Dohan created a late opportunity for CSUDH in the 87th minute, but her shot narrowly missed the mark.

The Toros will aim to capitalize on their strong defensive showing in their next home match against Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday, October 11th at 7:00pm.
