SEASIDE, Calif. – Despite strong performances from several players, Cal State Dominguez Hills fell to Cal State Monterey Bay in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 21-25) on Saturday night at the Otter Sports Center in CCAA action. The Toros are now 5-9 overall and 2-4 in CCAA competition while Cal State Monterey Bay moves to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in CCAA play.
The Toros came out strong in the first set, winning 25-22 behind a balanced attack led by
Ava Hurry, who recorded 15 kills with a .250 hitting percentage, and
Kayly Pau, who added 14 kills and 2 blocks.
Bailey Fuches orchestrated the offense with 48 assists and chipped in 6 digs.
Despite taking the first set, Cal State Dominguez Hills struggled to maintain their momentum, as Cal State Monterey Bay fought back, taking the next three sets by narrow margins. In the second and third sets, the Toros were held to hitting percentages of .106 and .100, respectively, allowing the Otters to edge them out with a pair of 25-22 wins.
The fourth set saw the Toros fight hard, hitting .275, but they were unable to close the gap, falling 25-21.
Grace Ford contributed 4 kills, while
Maria Bejines-Garibay added 11 kills and 7 digs in the effort. Defensively,
Nina Robles led the back row with 16 digs, and
Ava Hurry added 17 digs to her all-around performance.
The Toros will look to regroup as they continue their CCAA schedule in their next match-up against Chico State Friday October 11 at 5 PM.
