CARSON, Calif.— Cal State Dominguez Hills salvaged a 1-1 draw against Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday at Dignity Health Sports Park, thanks to a second-half penalty goal from Kaila Tone. The draw brings the Toros to 4-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play.
CSUSB opened the scoring in the 41st minute when Emma Frausto converted a penalty kick, giving the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. The Toros struggled offensively in the first half, with no shots recorded before the break. However, they regrouped and came out firing in the second half.
Christine Duarte sparked the attack for CSUDH, registering the Toros' first shot in the 48th minute, which forced a save from CSUSB goalkeeper Leila Peregrina. Duarte continued to be a threat, with another shot on target in the 56th minute, but Peregrina was up to the task again.
The Toros finally broke through in the 70th minute when Tone was fouled in the box, earning a penalty kick. Tone calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, tying the game 1-1. Taya Bohenko added pressure with a shot in the 69th minute, but Peregrina once again made a crucial save.
Defensively, goalkeeper Kylie Yuzon was solid, making four saves, including two late stops on shots by Emma Frausto in the 83rd minute and Reagan Parkhill in the 86th minute, preserving the draw.
CSUDH totaled five shots in the second half, with Duarte and Bohenko leading the attack, while Tone's leadership in both defense and offense proved crucial in securing the result.
CSUDH will look to build on this performance in their next match against Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday, October 20th, at 11:30 a.m.
