CARSON — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros dominated from start to finish in a commanding 4-0 win over Sonoma State on Sunday at Toro Stadium.
Mikey McKibbin led the Toros' offense with two goals and an assist, propelling the Toros to its third conference victory of the season.
The Toros opened the scoring in the 30th minute when McKibbin netted his first goal with a well-placed shot that gave the Toros a 1-0 lead going into halftime. McKibbin continued to be a threat, and his pressure paid off again in the second half.
In the 60th minute, McKibbin set up
Jose Peredia, who doubled the lead with a strike to the bottom corner, putting the Toros up 2-0. McKibbin added his second goal in the 81st minute, completing a perfect setup by the CSUDH midfield. Freshman
Zach Eichelberger also got on the board in the 80th minute, scoring off a rebound to extend the lead to 3-0.
Defensively, goalkeeper Arturo Magaña was rock solid, facing four shots and keeping a clean sheet without needing to make a save, thanks to the strong defensive line led by
Mason Cookus and
Cland Iwasaki.
The Toros finished with 11 total shots, six on target.
Logan Kaufman added two attempts, including a close shot saved by Sonoma's goalkeeper in the 65th minute, while Cookus threatened in the 72nd with a shot on goal that was saved.
The win improves Cal State Dominguez Hills to 5-4-2 overall and 2-0-2 in conference play. The Toros will look to continue their momentum in their next match at the Dignity Health Sports Park on Thursday, October 17
th against Cal State San Bernardino at 7pm.
