SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal State Dominguez Toros expand their win streak to seven games after they outrun the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes, 94-83.
The Toros expand their win streak to seven games, creating distance from the CCAA conference pack as they stand in first place by two games. The Toros now lead the conference with a CCAA record of 11-2 and overall record of 16-3. The Coyotes are tied for second place in the CCAA with a record of 14-5 overall and 9-4 CCAA.
In the first half, the Toros set a solid foundation for their victory. They shot 52.17% from the field, making 12 of 23 attempts. Their accuracy from beyond the arc was notable as well, with a 42.86% success rate (3 of 7). The team was nearly flawless from the free-throw line, hitting 13 of 14 attempts, translating to 92.86% accuracy. This efficient scoring helped them establish an early lead.
The second half saw the Toros elevate their offensive game to an even higher level. Their field goal percentage soared to 70.83%, with 17 successful shots out of 24 attempts. From the three-point line, they maintained consistency, shooting 44.44% (4 of 9). At the free-throw line, they continued their strong performance, making 16 of 19 attempts (84.21%). This exceptional shooting in the second half was crucial in maintaining and extending their lead over the Coyotes.
"This game was all about toughness and our guys were ready for the challenge," said coach
Steve Becker. "San Bernardino is a really good defensive team, so it's good to see our offense clicking and our guys complimenting each other the way we did tonight. We have another tough road trip next week, and we need to get better before we take off."
Jeremy Dent-Smith led the charge for the Toros, scoring 28 points in 31 minutes. His shooting was efficient, making 8 of 11 field goals, including 1 of 2 from three-point range, and an impressive 11 of 12 from the free-throw line. Additionally, Dent-Smith grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists, showcasing his all-around game.
Jakob Alamudun also played a pivotal role in the win, scoring 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting. Alamudun was active on the boards as well, pulling down six rebounds, and he contributed two assists.
Jacob Washington provided a spark off the bench, scoring 11 points in 17 minutes, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range. His energy and accuracy from deep were crucial for the Toros.
Andre Ball added 10 points in 29 minutes, connecting on 3 of his 4 shots from the field and 1 of 2 from beyond the arc. Ball's contribution extended beyond scoring, as he also grabbed two rebounds and provided solid defense.
Alex Garcia and
DJ Guest each contributed nine points. Garcia was efficient with his shooting, hitting 4 of 6 from the field, and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Toros continue on the road as they head to Seaside on Thursday, February 1
st to take on the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters at 7:30pm.
